How To Make A Pincushion From Recycled Materials

Materials Needed:

- Scissors

- Scrap fabric

- Needle

- Thread

- Container (I used an empty candle tin, but you can use anything you like the shape of as long as it's as tall as your pins, like jars, little boxes, etc.)

- Glue (optional)

- Stuffing (optional)

Step 1:

Cut part of your scrap fabric into a larger oval and then cut the rest into tiny strips to stuff it with

(You can easily measure how many of the scraps you'll need by putting them into the container as you cut them to see how filled up it is.)

Optional Step :

This step is optional, but I like to add stuffing because I like how it feels better for putting a pin into

Step 2:

Put the scrap and stuffing mixture onto your larger oval and shape it into a circle in the middle

Step 3:

Next, sew essentially a basting stitch all the way around the oval. Then, pull the thread tight and gather the fabric until it is closed around the stuffing.

Step 4:

Before you tie that thread off, put the cushion into your container to test it and see if you like it or if you need to add or take out any stuffing.

Step 5:

Once you're happy, tie off the thread and put the cushion into your container.

Optional Step:

Glue the bottom of the cushion to the base of the container. This isn't necessary, but it can help to make it a little more secure

Why I Like This Project:

I like this project for 2 main reasons:

  1. It is very sustainable. You're finding a use for a container that you otherwise might have thrown away. You're also using scrap fabric which can be really hard to find a real use for.

  2. This is very useful. Anyone who sews knows how helpful and convenient a pincushion can be. This is great for personal use or as a gift for someone who sews.
